What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Most men may experience temporary erection difficulties at certain times in their lives. Fatigue, stress, emotional strain, or temporary health issues can all contribute to occasional problems. However, when erection difficulties become persistent, affect sexual performance, reduce self-confidence, or negatively impact a relationship, they should be considered a medical condition requiring professional evaluation.

Erectile dysfunction is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Although its prevalence increases with age, it is a condition that can usually be investigated thoroughly and, in most cases, successfully treated.

How Does an Erection Occur?

An erection is not simply a function of the penis.

For a normal erection to occur, several systems must work together in harmony, including:

The brain
The nervous system
The cardiovascular system
Hormones
Penile blood vessels
Erectile tissue within the penis

Sexual stimulation triggers a series of signals that cause the penile arteries to dilate, increasing blood flow into the erectile tissues. At the same time, the veins responsible for draining blood from the penis become compressed, allowing blood to remain trapped within the erectile bodies. This process results in penile rigidity and erection.

Any disruption in this complex mechanism may lead to erectile dysfunction.

How Common Is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common male sexual health problems worldwide, affecting millions of men.

Although the likelihood of ED increases with age, it is increasingly being diagnosed in younger men due to factors such as diabetes, obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyles, and chronic stress.

Particularly in men over the age of 40, erectile dysfunction should be viewed not only as a sexual health issue but also as a potential indicator of overall health status.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Erectile Dysfunction?

Vascular Disease

Today, vascular disorders are considered the leading cause of erectile dysfunction.

Because the penile arteries are smaller than the coronary arteries, early vascular disease often manifests first as erectile difficulties before symptoms of heart disease become apparent.

In some men, erectile dysfunction may develop several years before the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes can affect both blood vessels and nerves involved in the erectile process.

Long-standing or poorly controlled diabetes may significantly impair erectile function and is one of the strongest risk factors for ED.

Testosterone Deficiency

Testosterone plays a central role in male sexual he
